Yesterday was another beautful day and not only was it Valentine's day, but also the latest village walk around Fulford and surrounding areas. 5 minutes walk out of the village and you really appreciate the glorious countryside in which the village is to be found. We ought to really start writing down these walks so that others can enjoy them at their leisure.
Talk soon turned to the future of the Shoulder of Mutton - with news that it may well close again shortly, it represents a real opportunity for a couple to take on running the pub at the moment, and turn it back into the country haven it deserves to be. Enterprise Inns have taken the bold step of agreeing that anyone can take on the challenge of running the pub, renting it for only £1 per week and even running it as a free house, so that they can buy beer from anywhere they like. It would be ideal to link it to a micro-brewery, so that the pub can concentrate on good quality food and real ales. The car park is large enough to turn a section into an area for the many horse riders passing through the village to tie up their horse whilst they pop in for refreshment - and with walkers and dogs welcome, you really could make a go of the pub.
The village committe would support any efforts to make a real difference and breathe some fresh life into this pub, so why not think about it. It would particularly suit a couple approaching retirement, looking to move out to the countryside setting!
